DESCRIPTION
Begin your day with an early pick-up from your hotel for a scenic transfer across the Isthmus of Panama to the historic Caribbean port town of Portobelo.
This once-crucial outpost was established by the Spanish conquerors, who built fortified structures to guard the immense riches—especially gold from Peru—that were transported overland via the Camino de Cruces, then down the Chagres River in small boats, and finally shipped to Spain from Portobelo. The incredible wealth that passed through this town made it a prime target for pirates and privateers like Sir Francis Drake, William Parker, and the infamous Henry Morgan.
Step into history as we explore the colonial forts, the San Juan de Dios Church, the San Felipe Church—home of the revered Black Christ—and the old Customs House, where treasures once awaited shipment across the Atlantic. It’s your chance to walk in the footsteps of pirates, soldiers, and explorers.
At midday, we’ll stop for lunch (not included) at a local restaurant featuring authentic Caribbean cuisine—a flavorful and satisfying break with ocean views and island vibes.
In the afternoon, the journey continues with a visit to the Gatun Visitors Center, overlooking the impressive Panama Canal Expansion. This modern engineering marvel—completed in 2016 after nearly a decade of work—added a third lane to the canal, enabling the passage of massive Neopanamax ships and securing Panama’s role as a global trade hub.
After this full day of history, culture, and engineering wonders, you’ll return to your hotel in the late afternoon.
