Camino de Cruces: Jungle Hike Through History

7 hours
Min. 4 persons
Spanish & English

Explore one of Panama’s most historic jungle routes on this unique hiking adventure. The journey begins along the scenic Plantation Trail, where lush rainforest, tropical wildlife, and shaded paths set the tone for an unforgettable experience. From there, you connect with the legendary Camino de Cruces, a centuries-old cobblestone trail originally built by the Spanish in 1527. Once a vital artery of global trade, this path carried gold, silver, textiles, and spices across the isthmus, transported by mule caravans bound for ships sailing to Spain.

But the trail holds more than commerce—it echoes with stories of adventure and conflict. In 1671, the infamous pirate Henry Morgan marched his forces along this very route after capturing the fortress of San Lorenzo, eventually sacking Panama La Vieja. Centuries later, in 1848, fortune seekers of the California Gold Rush also crossed this jungle path, using it as a shortcut between oceans long before the railroad existed.

Surrounded by dense greenery and rich history, you’ll walk through a landscape that feels untouched by time. The adventure continues to Venta de Cruces, where you’ll board a boat to Gamboa, enjoying a relaxing and scenic ride as you take in the beauty of the surrounding waterways.
